I didn’t think I was in the mood for a mystery but this one was the right book at the right time. Every stick and stone, every car, every animal, Christ, every person, is suddenly a terrible threat. Having previously read Griffiths other series based in 1950's Brighton, I've always been curious to try her more popular character Dr Ruth Galloway. There are twists and red herrings to keep the reader guessing right up to the final chapters, and little surprise that will ensure readers are eager for the second instalment, The Janus Stone. I really enjoyed getting to know Ruth and Nelson. Griffiths tells the story using Ruth and Harry as her main narrators, with occasional passages from the perspective of a captive girl. If possible I'd like if you compare the writer's style with Agatha Cristie's too. Are they the remains of a local girl who disappeared ten years earlier – or are the bones much older? ringing like the last trump. There's sex but it's handled delicately, certainly nothing graphic. When you have children, suddenly the world seems such a terrifying place. I thought their friendship was handled with sensitivity.
